Course Content:

• Introduction to COSHH Regulations: Overview of the COSHH regulations, including their purpose, scope, and the responsibilities of employers and employees in the healthcare setting.
• Identification of Hazardous Substances: Training on how to identify hazardous substances commonly found in healthcare environments, such as chemicals, biological agents, medications, and cleaning products.
• Risk Assessment Procedures: Guidance on conducting thorough COSHH risk assessments, including identifying hazards, evaluating risks, and implementing control measures to minimise exposure.
• Safe Handling and Storage: Best practices for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances, including labelling requirements and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Health Surveillance and Monitoring: Understanding the importance of health surveillance in detecting early signs of exposure to hazardous substances, and implementing appropriate monitoring procedures.
• Emergency Response and First Aid: Training on how to respond to incidents involving hazardous substances, including spill response, decontamination procedures, and first aid measures.
• COSHH Documentation and Record-Keeping: Instructions on maintaining accurate COSHH documentation, including risk assessments, safety data sheets (SDS), and records of training and health surveillance.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the COSHH Training Course, participants will be able to:

• Implement Health Surveillance: Understand the role of health surveillance in monitoring for signs of exposure, and establish appropriate procedures to protect staff and patients.

• Respond to Emergencies Involving Hazardous Substances: Act swiftly and effectively in the event of an incident involving hazardous substances, using proper spill response and decontamination techniques, as well as administering first aid when necessary.

• Maintain Accurate COSHH Records: Ensure accurate and up-to-date COSHH documentation is maintained, including risk assessments, safety data sheets, and records of health surveillance and training.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the risks associated with hazardous substances in a healthcare environment.
