The Tissue Viability Training Course is designed for healthcare professionals involved in the prevention, assessment, and management of skin and tissue integrity issues, including pressure ulcers and chronic wounds. This course provides comprehensive instruction on the principles of tissue viability, including the underlying causes of tissue damage, assessment techniques, and evidence-based treatment strategies. Participants will gain practical skills in evaluating and managing skin and wound conditions, using appropriate interventions and products to enhance patient outcomes. The course combines theoretical learning with hands-on practice to ensure participants are proficient in tissue viability care.

Course Content:

  • Introduction to Tissue Viability: Overview of tissue viability, including the importance of maintaining skin and tissue integrity and the impact of compromised tissue on patient health and quality of life.
  • Anatomy and Physiology of Skin: Understanding the structure and function of the skin, including its layers and the factors that contribute to skin integrity and vulnerability to damage.
  • Pressure Ulcers and Chronic Wounds: Definitions, stages, and classifications of pressure ulcers and chronic wounds, including their aetiology, risk factors, and the implications for patient care.
  • Assessment Techniques: Methods for assessing skin and wound conditions, including visual inspection, use of assessment tools (e.g., Braden Scale, Waterlow Score), and documenting findings to guide treatment plans.
  • Wound Care and Management: Evidence-based approaches to wound care, including cleaning, debridement, and the selection and application of dressings and advanced wound care products.
  • Pressure Ulcer Prevention: Strategies for preventing pressure ulcers, including risk assessment, repositioning techniques, use of pressure-relieving devices, and implementing skin care protocols.
  • Managing Complications: Identification and management of complications related to wounds and pressure ulcers, such as infections, necrosis, and exudate management.
  • Patient and Family Education: Techniques for educating patients and their families about skin and wound care, including self-care practices, lifestyle adjustments, and recognising signs of complications.
  • Legal and Ethical Considerations: Overview of legal and ethical responsibilities in tissue viability care, including documentation, obtaining informed consent, and adherence to clinical guidelines.
  • Practical Skills Session: Hands-on practice in assessing and managing wounds, including the application of dressings, use of wound care products, and demonstration of repositioning techniques to prevent pressure ulcers.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the Tissue Viability Training Course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand Tissue Viability Principles: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of tissue viability, including the anatomy and physiology of the skin and the impact of compromised tissue on patient health.

  • Assess Skin and Wounds: Accurately assess skin and wound conditions using appropriate assessment tools, and document findings to inform care planning and management.

  • Implement Wound Care: Apply evidence-based wound care techniques, including cleaning, debridement, and selection and application of suitable dressings and advanced wound care products.

  • Prevent Pressure Ulcers: Implement effective strategies to prevent pressure ulcers, including conducting risk assessments, applying repositioning techniques, and using pressure-relieving devices.

  • Manage Complications: Identify and manage complications related to wounds and pressure ulcers, including infections, necrosis, and excess exudate.

  • Educate Patients and Families: Provide clear and supportive education to patients and their families on skin and wound care, including self-care practices and recognising signs of complications.

  • Apply Legal and Ethical Standards: Understand and apply legal and ethical principles related to tissue viability care, including maintaining accurate documentation, obtaining informed consent, and adhering to clinical guidelines.

  • Demonstrate Practical Competence: Confidently apply the knowledge and skills learned through practical sessions to assess and manage skin and wounds effectively, improving patient outcomes.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be equipped with the essential skills and knowledge required for effective tissue viability management. They will receive certification, reflecting their competence in tissue viability care and their readiness to deliver high-quality patient care in clinical settings.
