- Introduction to Venepuncture: Overview of the venepuncture procedure, its clinical significance, and the anatomy of veins commonly used for blood collection.
- Infection Control and Safety: Best practices for maintaining a sterile environment, including hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and needle safety to prevent cross-contamination and injuries.
- Patient Preparation and Communication: Techniques for preparing patients physically and psychologically for the procedure, including explaining the process, obtaining informed consent, and addressing patient concerns.
- Equipment and Supplies: Identification and correct use of venepuncture equipment, such as needles, syringes, vacutainers, tourniquets, and blood collection tubes, as well as understanding the color-coding system for different tests.
- Venepuncture Technique: Step-by-step guidance on performing venepuncture, including vein selection, site preparation, needle insertion, blood sample collection, and post-procedure care.
- Troubleshooting and Complication Management: Strategies for handling difficult venepuncture scenarios, such as locating difficult veins, managing failed attempts, and responding to complications like hematoma formation or fainting.
